Corinthians faces transfer ban after breaching agreement

Corinthians failed to comply with the CAS decision and did not pay the $6.145 million owed for the purchase of Ecuadorian defender Félix Torres. The transfer took place in early 2024 from Santos Laguna, Mexico.

What happened?

The Court's decision, issued on July 28, set a deadline of 11:59 PM on Monday (11) for full payment. The amount was not paid, and now Santos Laguna can appeal to FIFA to apply the transfer ban to Timão.

Why is this important for Corinthians?

The punishment is not automatic, and it is precisely this gap that the Corinthians management is relying on to try to reach a last-minute agreement. Acting president Osmar Stabile is in direct contact with Mexican officials in an attempt to renegotiate the debt through a new installment plan.

What's next?

The expectation of the alvinegra leadership is that, as long as negotiations are ongoing, Santos Laguna will avoid appealing to FIFA. With or without the threat of a transfer ban, Corinthians is not currently pursuing new signings.
